VIC Fact Sheet: Victorian Curriculum and Continuum Tracker

Are the new Victorian Curriculum subjects available for use in Continuum Tracker?

The Victorian Curriculum subjects are available under:
  • Continuum Tracker > Continuum Tracker Setup > Continuum Bank under the VCAA tab.

VCAA by Strands, by Achievement Standards and by Substrands should all be available for use. There will be an import button beside each subject.

How will the Level scoring in the Victorian Curriculum translate into progression points for Academic Reports?

Subjects in the Victorian Curriculum may be divided into Levels, representing an entire school year, or combined levels, when the subject may be taught across two years.

When using Sentral’s standard VCAA Strands continuums, you can configure this by going into Continuum Tracker Setup and Manage Continuums.

For subjects divided into Levels you can use the Cluster Progression option within each continuum to determine how many markers must be achieved within a cluster in order for a student to reach a given progression point score.

Each cluster (Level) can be clicked on in order to enable the breakpoint override. The Breakpoint Progression Editor will allow you to specify, for example, that when 50% of the cluster has been achieved, the student will have reached F.5.

For subjects where the markers are combined across two levels, you will need to set a custom Breakpoint Set.

Breakpoint Sets allow you to divide a cluster into a series of ‘sets’. For a subject taught across two years, you would expect to need breakpoints at 25%, 50% and 75% to cover all the possible progression scores a student might achieve over that two-year period:

A custom Breakpoint Set can be assigned to the continuum by editing it in Continuum Setup.

This will allow you to configure the student’s progression score at a particular point within the cluster. That is, at 25% they could be at F.5, at 50% they could be at 1, at 75% they could be at 1.5 and when the cluster is 100% achieved they will be at 2.

Can I make my own continuums?

If you would like to create your own continuums (e.g. to set up custom ‘I can …’ statements for the school), there are template samples available under the Import/Export menu in Continuum Tracker Setup.

When creating your continuums, we recommend dividing the clusters into progression points (e.g. 0.5, F, F.5) within the template, as this data can be imported into Academic Reports without further manipulation. If you divide the clusters by some other scheme (e.g. Levels) you will need to make use of Breakpoints to create progression point scores.

Can I edit existing continuums to suit my school requirements?

There are currently two ways to make changes to existing curriculums.

Option One

Each continuum will have an Options button aligned to it under Continuum Tracker Setup in the Manage Continuums menu. Under Options you can choose to Export CSV. A CSV file can be opened in Microsoft Excel, and the clusters, aspects and markers can be changed, added and rearranged.

This CSV file can then be imported back into Sentral under the Manage Continuums menu.

Option two

Each continuum can be edited directly within Sentral. Under the Clusters menu, new clusters can be added, and existing clusters may be renamed.

The Cluster Mapping menu can be used to allocate clusters to an aspect. Continuum aspects should correlate to the Strands and Modes in your Victorian Curriculum subjects.

The Edit Markers menu can be used to either add completely new markers to your cluster, or to move existing markers from a pre-made cluster to your new one. You can click and drag on the handle to the left of any marker to move it.

You might use either method to transform a continuum divided into Levels (e.g. Level 1, Level 2, Level 3) into a continuum divided into progression points (e.g. F, F.5, 1, 1.5). A continuum divided into progression points will not need further manipulation to import successfully into Academic Reports.

Can I check the progression scores for my students?

The progression point score a student has achieved according to the Breakpoint Set should now be visible within the Student Overview menu item for each continuum when you search for a student. This is the score that should import into Academic Reports. You can check this screen to ensure the Breakpoint Set is achieving the values you want before importing the data into your reporting period.

Note:
Instructions on linking your continuums to Academic Reports are included in our rollover guide.
