Can an image or PDF of an asset be uploaded?

Asset Manager has a section called Document Upload enabling you to upload document related to an asset.
Go to Asset Manager > Asset Management > Document Upload 
File Uploader detail needs to be completed first and then drop files 

When you go back to search that particular asset, the item you uploaded will sit under Documents.
