How do I ensure Messages are sent to a Non Residential family?

To ensure messages are sent to relevant contacts, this needs to be configured under Messaging > Setup Messaging > General Settings:

1. The Preferred contacts priority (Non-Residential Family) needs to be set. This is fine 'as is', but if it's on Do Not Contact you won't be able to send messages to any non-residential parents:

2. Ensure the contact is correctly linked to the student(s) for sending:
  • navigate to the Address Book and search for the Student(s)
  • click on the Student's name to Edit their Contact Details View

Note: each student does have to be managed individually. While this scenario is relatively simple, you can modify the students in a family individually to have a non-residential parent receive messages for one student but not the other, if that is a requirement for any family at your school.

  • Make sure that the Preference dropdown is set to Custom, and that both parents are ticked

If there are more contacts available (e.g. if you decide to allow emergency contacts to act as 'preferred') you will be able to select more people. Absence notifications are sent to Preferred Contacts by default – so if both are ticked, they will go to both parents.

This will ensure that the non-residential parent/carer receives all communications along with the primary residential parent/carer.
